California department stores must have gender-neutral toy department

The new law states that department stores must also have a department that is not specifically aimed at one gender. So it is not the case that boys and girls departments should no longer exist, but a department will be added where all kinds of stuff, for both boys and girls, with toys and care products are offered. Only clothing is not covered by the new law.

The bill’s initiator, Representative Evan Low, is pleased that the bill has been passed. He was inspired by his 10-year-old daughter; she wondered why she had to go to a boys’ department for certain toys. “The law should ensure that a young girl can also find a police car, fire truck or dinosaur. And at the same time, if a guy is a little more artistic and wants to play with glitter, why not?” Low told the Los Angeles Times.

The law is for department stores that employ more than 500 employees. Low hopes other stores will follow suit. Some stores have already made changes in this area. The American department store chain Target no longer has a boys and girls department. It has also banned all gender-based drilling.

Not everyone was eager for the law. Members of the Republican Party believe that it is not up to the government to make these kinds of rules.
