José Manuel Calderón, the Spanish basketball legend, has made his debut at Carrusel Deportivo after his brand-new signing on Cadena SER’s weekend program. He tells us what his day-to-day life is like in New York, how he is experiencing basketball from another perspective off the courts and all the NBA news that goes from the Irving anti-vaccine to the arrival of more Spaniards to the basketball elite.
The day to day in New York of a former player changes completely and this is what he has told in Carrusel Deportivo where he has confessed not having his own car until three years ago and enjoying family time, something he did not do when he was the player.
“My routine is very normal, I try to do everything I could not do before. Take the children to school, pick them up, go to the office … enjoy the family.”

His work in the players association
“Our association has 450 players in which everything changes, with different conditions each one. You have to put everyone in agreement that is the most difficult thing. I remain connected to basketball and I am proud to do my bit.”
We have surprised José Manuel Calderón with one of the people who know him best on and off the pitch, another member of ‘La Familia’, Berni Rodríguez. It was not the only surprise, Felipe Reyes also wanted to send him a very affectionate message of encouragement.
Who would Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid be in the NBA?
“Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics and Chicago Bulls would be Real Madrid, Barça and Atlético de Madrid, respectively.”
How do you rate the signing of Juancho Hernangómez by the Boston Celtics?
“Hopefully Hernangómez has minutes and that perseverance that he has lacked.”
How is Irving living the issue?
“Everything has been taken out of context with Irving. Everything changes when the state of San Francisco decides that no player can play if they have not been vaccinated. We will see what happens in the next few days. We are 97% of players who are vaccinated.”
Will you witness how they retire number 16 in the Lakers for Pau Gasol?
“I would love to go see the tribute at Los Staples to Pau Gasol. I hope he can invite me and experience that historic moment for Spanish basketball.”
