Nuremberg – Sunday, 10.10.2021, 3:42 p.m.
The title decision in the DTM developed into a real drama at the season finale at the Norisring in Nuremberg according to the motto “When two fight, the third is happy”.
In the end, title favorite Liam Lawson (Red Bull Alpha Tauri AF Corse) and his fiercest rival Kelvin van der Linde (Abt-Audi) are left empty-handed. The brilliant winner is Maximilian Götz (Mercedes-AMG Team HRT), who started the race 22 points behind.
The Tyrolean Lucas Auer (Mercedes-AMG Team Winward) plays an important role in Nuremberg, slowing down more and more in the last minutes of the race, allowing fellow brand colleagues Götz to pass and celebrate the necessary victory.
The German secured the overall standings with 230 points, ahead of Lawson (NZL / 227) and van der Linde (RSA / 208), who after several incidents did not get above ranks 18 and 17 respectively. Auer (152) is fifth overall behind Marco Wittmann (GER / 171).
Preliminary decision in turn 1
A preliminary decision was made in the first corner when Van der Linde pushed Pole-Setter Lawson off the track. The Ferrari is so damaged that the race for Lawson, for whom sixth place would have been enough for the title, is over. The Audi driver takes a 5-second penalty for the maneuver, which he has to serve as part of his pit stop.
Van der Linde waits a long time with his mandatory pit stop and only pits about ten minutes before the end of the race. The South African comes out behind Leader Auer and Philip Ellis, but just ahead of Götz, and has a tough fight with his opponent, in which he suffered a tire damage on the left rear, spins as a result and has to pit again.
Götz, who is now in third place, is first let past by Winward Mercedes driver Ellis and in the end by Auer too.
