The Ministry of Territorial Policy, led by Isabel Rodríguez, will award for 7.2 million euros the comprehensive reform of its headquarters. This is the execution of the works of “restoration, rehabilitation and reform of the Palace of Villamejor”, located in Paseo de la Castellana number 3.

As OKDIARIO has learned, 13 companies have submitted to the tender. After evaluating the criteria established in the contracting specifications, the best placed has been EDHINOR SA, which offers to complete the project for 7,283,672 euros. The term is 18 months in which workers and senior officials of the Ministry of Territorial Policy will have to move to another rented building by the Government.

The Villamejor Palace was seat of the Presidency of the Government between 1914 and 1977, until Adolfo Suárez transferred it to the La Moncloa complex. Before, in 1910, it was where the grandmother of King Felipe VI was born, María de las Mercedes de Borbón.

The works in the Ministry of Territorial Policy, which began the minister Miquel Iceta and that Isabel Rodríguez is now also promoting, they are especially complex because the Villamejor Palace is Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) since 2002 with the category of monument.

The procurement documents remind that construction it started at the end of the 19th century, ending at the beginning of the XX. Its floor plan is rectangular and has a central interior patio with three levels above ground plus an attic and semi-basement. The building is set back with respect to the Paseo de la Castellana, leaving a free gardened area where the access staircase and the passage of carriages are located.

In the middle of the 20th century, it was attached to the main building a two-story pavilion to locate various units (computer, cafeteria, etc.), on the back patio, which originally formed part of the garden of the adjacent Egaña palace, hiding the brick wall of neo-Mudejar influence that limits said patio. Later the main building has undergone other interventions. Among others, the expansion of the attic floor, occupation of the central courtyard with a construction for services, assembly of the metal evacuation staircase, etc.

The Ministry justifies that these works from which the minister on duty will benefit are a priority because “the palace presents numerous pathologies on its facades and roofs, which must be corrected by means of the corresponding rehabilitation works ”. They detail that the project also implies providing the property with a new centralized air conditioning system, which allows eliminating the outdoor air conditioning units currently located on the balconies and windows.

On the other hand, the Government wants «recover the original state of the palace and put in value the initial construction ». It aims to remove “the alterations made throughout the last century.” The elements outside the palace that have been incorporated into the property will be removed, in order to restore all the facades and enclosures of the building, as well as recover the exterior spaces (gardens and accesses).

It should be remembered that the Government of Pedro Sánchez has been characterized by wanting to have the ministerial offices up to date. As published by OKDIARIO the Ministry of Universities, led by Manuel Castells, developed a contract to renew for 371,000 euros a good part of the furniture from that department. The tender for 22,000 euros for take care of plants of the Institute for Women. He demanded a lawn no more than 10 centimeters high.
