Mohamed Salah has been compared to Lionel Messi after the Liverpool superstar put in a world-class performance in the draw with Man City.
Salah was at his best as he provided an assist before scoring in his seventh straight game of the season.
Salah scored his 101st Premier League goal this weekend
It wasn’t good enough for the winner as Kevin De Bruyne equalized with nine minutes left, but Reds boss Jurgen Klopp felt it was a fitting way to mark the death of Roger Hunt, the the club’s all-time top scorer, who died on Tuesday.
“The second goal, only the best players in the world score goals like this,” Klopp said.
“The first touch, the first challenge he won and then put him on his right foot and finish the situation was absolutely exceptional.
Klopp raves about Salah’s talents after the game
“This club never forgets these things, so people will be talking about this goal for a long time and in 50 or 60 years they will remember this goal.”
TalkSPORT host Jamie O’Hara agreed on how good Salah is and thinks he’s the closest to Messi we’ve seen.
“He’s the best player in the world, to me, if you look at a player who plays at the height of his powers,” O’Hara told Breakfast.
Messi is one of the greatest players of all time
“I can’t look at anyone and say they are doing better than Mo Salah. Not only does he do it in the Premier League, which is the best league in the world, but he does it in big games.
“This performance against Man City was exceptional. Individual brilliance, especially for its purpose.
“He used his pace and skills for Mane’s goal, but his goal was exceptional. He used all of his attributes in an instant. Strength, fast feet, pace, power and the finish with his weaker foot showed just how good he was.
“That’s a big statement… I think he’s the closest thing to Lionel Messi we’ve seen, without being Lionel Messi.
“Since Messi’s heyday, if you look at another player who has come close to a player like Messi, I would say Mo Salah.”
Salah enjoyed his goal against City – and everyone else too
The goal against City was his 101st in the Premier League and O’Hara believes he should be in the conversation for one of the best the league has ever seen.
He added: “I’m not saying he’s close to Messi because he’s on another planet, but when we looked at Messi he did things against world-class players and made them dumb.
“Mo Salah is doing it now. He doesn’t do it against Norwich or Burnley.
“He does it in massive matches against world-class players. Is he appreciated enough for what he is doing at the moment? I don’t think it is.
“When we talk about Premier League players and Premier League greats, he is never mentioned.
“If you look at the records he’s broken, he must be in the conversation for one of the best Premier League players of all time.”
