Saakashvili had every right to return to his homeland, and the accusations against him are groundless, MEPs believe

TBILISI, Oct 4 – Sputnik. The group of European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) of the European Parliament calls on the Georgian authorities to drop charges against the former president of the country and leader of the largest opposition party “National Movement” Mikhail Saakashvili and immediately release him from custody, the ECR said in a statement.

The third president of Georgia, Mikhail Saakashvili, was detained in one of the sleeping areas of Tbilisi on Friday evening. He illegally crossed the border and arrived in Georgia from Ukraine ahead of the local elections, which took place on Saturday, October 2.

“Saakashvili had every right to return to his homeland. The accusations against him from the ruling party of Georgia are groundless. The people of Georgia have every right to choose their leaders. Politicians should freely discuss problems, and not send letters from prison,” the statement said.

According to the deputies, the former president has an impressive track record as a reformer in Georgia, who has put his country on a democratic path.

The ECR group also recalls that Saakashvili’s actions, for the first time in post-Soviet Georgia, allowed for a peaceful transfer of power.

European politicians are firmly convinced that political revanchism is not the path to be followed by the Georgian authorities, especially after the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights on the cases of other former officials who served under Saakashvili, who were clearly identified as politically motivated.

The European Conservative and Reformist Group is a center-right political group in the European Parliament, formed in 2009 in accordance with the founding principles of the Prague Declaration. These principles united MEPs from across the European Union who supported the vision of common sense reform for the entire EU.
