Serge Aurier has joined Villarreal on a free transfer after receiving a lifeline from former Arsenal boss Unai Emery in La Liga.

The Ivorian international’s contract with Tottenham was canceled this summer and he is looking for a new club after a four-year stint in north London.

The 29-year-old has now signed a one-year contract with Villarreal, who beat Manchester United in the Europa League final on penalties in May.

A statement from the Spanish club said: “Villarreal CF has reached an agreement with Serge Aurier, who joins the Yellow as a free agent and will represent the Yellow this season, with the possibility of extending the bond between the two sides for two more campaigns. .

“After completing his medical examination and signing his contract at Villarreal, Aurier will go to represent his country, Côte d’Ivoire, which has called him up for two World Cup qualifiers against Malawi (Friday 8 and Monday 11 October) .

Signed from PSG in August 2017, Aurier made his debut for Spurs in a 3-1 win over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League before making 110 appearances for the club, scoring eight goals.

He has been selected 70 times by Côte d’Ivoire, of which he is captain, and has also scored three times for his country.

Aurier will see familiar faces when he joins his Villarreal teammates.

Former Tottenham players Juan Foyth and Etienne Capoue both ply their trade with the Yellows, who sit 11th in La Liga.
