Ecuador.- The government of Ecuador affirmed this weekend that it has regained control of the country’s prison system, a few days after the fateful riot that took place in a prison where at least 118 inmates lost their lives.
She was the minister of Government, Alexandra Vela and the general commander of the police, Tannya varela who reported that the country’s prisons are “under control.”
Last Wednesday, the Ecuadorian president, Guillermo Lasso decreed a state of exception in the country’s prisons, after the confrontation of rival gangs in the Prison number 1 of Guayaquil, known as the Litoral penitentiary.
On that occasion, the president regretted what happened and after reporting preliminary data on the number of fatalities left by the riot, Lasso reaffirmed his power to face the situation by declaring a state of emergency.
“It is regrettable that the prisons are being turned into a territory of power dispute between criminal gangs”, Lasso mentioned.
“Declare a state of exception due to serious internal commotion in all the centers of deprivation of liberty that make up the social rehabilitation system at the national level, without exception, for a period of 60 days from the signing of this executive decree”added the president in a report.
