The accident happened near Markaryd, a town in southern Sweden. For reasons unknown, Vilks’ car ended up on the wrong side of the road and collided with a truck. Both vehicles caught fire. All occupants of the car were killed and the truck driver was seriously injured. For the time being, the police assume an accident, a police spokesperson told the Kvällsposten newspaper.
Vilks became famous after he made drawings in 2007 of the prophet Mohammed depicting him as a man with the body of a dog. These sparked anger among radical Muslims and a $100,000 reward was offered for the cartoonist’s murder.
In 2015, he was attacked while he was in a cultural center in Copenhagen, Denmark. Vilks was unharmed, but a Danish filmmaker present was killed. The assailant was eventually killed in a shootout with police.
