A Roosevelt Square, which is in the center of São Paulo, became a memorial to the victims of Covid-19. An artistic installation on site will honor the 38 thousand people who died from the disease in the city of São Paulo. Each victim will be represented by a pinwheel. Administrator Andressa de Oliveira, who lives near the site, says the space has become a symbol of respect and love. “I thought it was a beautiful gesture, to say that love still exists and that people need to understand, be more united, see that the world needs love”, he says.

Covid-19 victims from other regions of the country are represented by 60 thousand hearts painted on a thousand meters of the square’s walls. The tribute is carried out by Street Art Museum, by the Municipal Department of Culture of São Paulo and City Hall. Trader José Rodrigues believes that the pinwheel garden adorns the square with a very important meaning. “It’s a beautiful tribute to the covid-19 dead. It is an acknowledgment by the organizers, to so many families who have lost loved ones, who are going through difficulties”, comments José.

The pinwheels were made with recycled material by members of the samba school Go Go. Families who visit the space will receive colored ribbons that can be tied to ornaments with the names of the victims. The space also reminds the population that the pandemic is not over. “We need to see that it hasn’t happened yet and we need to take care of ourselves, wearing a mask and protecting ourselves”, says Andressa. The memorial will close on November 2nd, All Souls’ Day. On this date, people will be able to take home the weathervane corresponding to a person who died a victim of Covid-19.
