Apple unveiled new phones, tablets and smartwatches yesterday at its flagship annual novelties event. The company revealed its new iPhone models, including one that offers twice the storage of previous versions and other modest improvements over last year’s edition.

The presentation came at a time when the company is being challenged on various fronts, including competition, privacy and cybersecurity.

From a dark and empty auditorium and at an event broadcast online for the imposition of the coronavirus pandemic, Tim Cook, the head of the firm, praised the improved cameras, brighter screens and new functions for some of the other devices of the giant. based in Silicon Valley, like the iPad tablet.

“These are the best iPhones we’ve ever made,” Cook said of the new versions of the firm’s flagship product, underscoring Apple’s work to design “the best products and services to enrich people’s lives.”

But unlike last year, with the incorporation of the 5G connection, the technical improvements of the new generation of the brand’s devices do not include fundamental changes.

“Another annual update event without many surprises,” said Gene Munster of Loup Funds on his Twitter account.

THE IPHONE 13 RANGE

As expected, the Californian group unveiled the range of the iPhone 13, which includes four models, from the “Mini” version, which will be marketed from $ 700, to the iPhone 13 Pro Max, which starts at $ 1,100.

These prices are similar to the iPhone 12 when it went on sale in late 2020.

The iPhone 13 in Argentina will cost between $ 179,000 and $ 419,000, depending on the model of the line

Its cameras and batteries perform better, and 5G capacity is expected to be rolled out to more than 200 phone carriers in 60 countries and regions by the end of the year, explained Kaiann Drance, vice president in charge of iPhones.

As has been the case since the late Apple co-founder introduced the first model of the iPhone in 2007, company executives spoke reverently about the latest model, although it is not drastically different from the version they released nearly a year ago.

Possibly the most notable change in the high-end model of the iPhone 13 is the option of a full terabyte of storage – that is, 1,000 gigabytes – on the device, from the previous maximum of 512 gigabytes. That’s enough to store about 250,000 photos or about 500 hours of HD video.

Having a large amount of storage could become more important for many consumers with the advent of ultra-high definition video and ultra-fast 5G wireless networks that will make downloading content faster and easier.

The iPhone 13 includes a double camera on the back, which complements the front, is waterproof and will be available in five colors.

CRITICS AND DEMANDS

Apple has just put behind several weeks of controversy over its new tools to fight child pornography on its iPhone and iPad devices. The measures sparked a tidal wave of complaints among online privacy advocates.

The firm assured that the new algorithms proposed to better detect images of sexual content did not reduce the security or confidentiality of its system, but still decided in early September to postpone its implementation.

In parallel, it also announced concessions to application developers at the end of August. Many of them accuse Apple of abusing its dominant position in the mobile economy market, by forcing consumers to use the App Store to download any application on the brand’s devices and pay for digital goods and services.

“More than a million apps have been specifically designed” for the iPad, said Cook, who never misses an opportunity to highlight the rich ecosystem created by the 13-year-old invention of the App Store.

And yesterday, he urged users of the brand to update their devices as soon as possible after ensuring that he had fixed a major software flaw that allowed the Pegasus spyware to install itself on phones without even clicking.
