According to a media report, the mishap with the time measurement in the TV “Triell” led to significantly greater differences in the proportion of speeches than previously assumed. The main victim was Annalena Baerbock, of all people, who drew attention to the mistake. She spoke four minutes less than leader Olaf Scholz.
Annalena Baerbock was the first to notice that something was wrong with the timing of the TV “Triell” from ARD and ZDF. “Mr Scholz’s clock is still running,” replied the Greens’ candidate for chancellor, while her SPD opponent stopped speaking. Moderator Maybrit Illner then admitted technical problems that they intend to solve in the course of the live broadcast. But apparently this has not succeeded in the long term.

According to a report by the “Übermedien” portal, the speaking time at the meeting of the three candidates for the Chancellery was incorrectly measured right up to the end. The main victim was Baerbock, of all people, who had unselfishly drawn attention to the mistake. According to the portal’s calculations, there was almost four minutes of speaking time between her and the SPD candidate Olaf Scholz. Moderator Oliver Köhr announced in the course of the program: “We were told that the times are right again.”

TV “Triell”: Scholz spoke for 25 minutes, Baerbock only 21
According to the fade-in, CDU boss Armin Laschet had a speaking time of 26:25 minutes at the end of the live debate, Olaf Scholz 24:39 minutes, and Annalena Baerbock 24:25. According to “Übermedien”, the actual speech proportions differ greatly from this. In truth, SPD candidate Scholz had the most speaking time with 25:30 minutes, followed by Laschet (24:14) and Baerbock, who summed up only 21:37 minutes.
At the request of the media magazine, an ARD spokesman announced: “There was a software error behind this. The timekeeping was then also carried out by hand.” The moderators’ comment that the candidates were “relatively close together” in terms of time and that differences could no longer be compensated for by the end of the program meant that “transparency was created”. A transparency, as it is called with “Übermedien”, which however is based on wrong numbers. The broadcaster did not respond to the nature of the software error.
The breakdown in timing was not the only upsetting event on TV “Triell” from ARD and ZDF. An instrument case that fell over near the studio interrupted a speech by Annalena Baerbock with a rattling noise right at the beginning of the live series. There was also a lot of criticism of the moderation duo, which seemed poorly coordinated. ARD editor-in-chief Oliver Köhr and ZDF talker Maybrit Illner had repeatedly interrupted each other.
