A new edge of the case of irregularities in the municipality of Vitacura could splatter the already questioned former mayor of the commune, Raúl Torrealba (RN), who is being investigated for embezzlement of public funds and fraud, calling into question his 25-year management as the highest authority of the municipality.
To this case, there is now the payment of overtime to municipal officials in full quarantine by covid-19, a situation that was already understood as an acquired right, despite the fact that the workers were fulfilling their functions remotely .
And it is that in the last 18 months, the municipality of Vitacura disbursed more than 3,200 million pesos for the payment of overtime, even during the quarantine period.
An investigation of T13 accounts for this situation, which is reflected in the municipality’s payroll. Some officials acknowledged to the aforementioned media that this is one of the clearest examples of how the management of former mayor Torrealba operated.
That said, three of the officials who are being investigated today for fraud to the treasury are among those who received the most payments for this concept. The name of Antonia Larraín Prieto stands out, who denounced having delivered envelopes with money to the former mayor Torrealba, and who appears with a payment of 20 million pesos only for overtime pay in the last 18 months, exceeding the monthly maximum allowed by law , unless a mayoral decree justifies it, as it happened in this case.
Likewise, controller Sergio Beaumont Araya and the director of administration and finances José Bucarey, respectively, received 20 and 27 million pesos for overtime during the pandemic.
Beaumont told T13 that “they are actively collaborating to clarify the facts, in order to demonstrate that the unit under his charge has strictly complied with its regulatory functions.”
Vitacura officials acknowledge that these overtime payments are generating tensions within the municipality, especially now when the new administration decided to restrict them.
