Municipality threatens with a penalty for theater that wants a full house

“Municipal supervisors will check on Thursday whether the theater is adhering to the Covid measures. If there are more than 80 people in the room, an incriminating penalty will be imposed,” said a spokeswoman for the municipality. That penalty is actually imposed if the theater again does not comply with the corona rules on Friday and allows more than 80 people in the hall.

That the municipality is threatening with a penalty payment is “no surprise for the theater”, a spokeswoman said. “We had already considered that a fine could be one of the enforcement measures. That is the role that the municipality must play, we understand that.”

Due to the current corona measures, theaters are currently allowed to let in two thirds of their full capacity. The measure will no longer apply as of September 25, but the Haarlem theater decided to end the measure earlier. The theater communicated that during the performances of Theo Maassen on Thursday and Friday all 120 seats will be occupied per evening. Visitors must show their CoronaCheck app in advance.

The theater and the municipality are still in talks to find a joint solution. According to the municipality, various alternatives have been discussed, but the theater chooses to completely throw the hall up. “We have different views on that,” said the spokesperson for theater De Liefde.
