Red Eléctrica does not consider possible the “early and disorderly” closure of the nuclear power plants with which Foro Nuclear has threatened due to the supposed economic unfeasibility to which the government measures to lower the electricity bill would lead them. The system operator argues that the energy produced by these plants covers a substantial part of the electricity demand, and its contribution to the safety of the system is very important.
Red Eléctrica, as the system operator, is responsible for analyzing the closure requests of any plant. Consulted by Cadena SER, it indicates that it cannot pronounce a priori on each specific case. But that “today, when the seven operating nuclear reactors cover between 20% and 22% of the electricity demand, it is not possible to close them.” In addition to the energy they produce, he points out, their contribution to the security of the system is very important from a technical point of view.
As operator of the system -remarks Red Eléctrica- it has the legal and technical mechanisms to guarantee supply, in what appears to be a warning against the eventual intention to close a nuclear reactor before the schedule established for its staggered exit from the system until 2035.
