In conversation with the first edition of Radioanalysis, the president of the Arica Medical College, Hernán Sudy Pinto referred to the epidemiological situation in the north of the country, where there has been a sustained increase in cases, mainly with the delta variant, which has generated concern in the health authorities.
For this reason some communes, including Arica, fell back to phase three of Preparation as of this Wednesday.
Regarding the causes of this increase, the doctor explained that “the first cases of delta were foreigners who entered here. This is because the borders here in the north are very flat, so it is easy for people to cross the borders and then those first deltas infected the population. There is a 60% relationship between delta cases and total positives “ stressed.
However, the union leader stressed that “the large number of delta cases have their complete vaccination scheme; of the 78 active cases we have, only five have been hospitalized which implies that the vaccination process has served its purpose. This variation (delta) is more contagious, but it is also less aggressive and has caught the vaccinated population so the situation is completely different ”.
Regarding greater freedoms for the population and the possibility of new outbreaks, also considering that the Government is considering not extending the state of exception, the representative of Colmed pointed out that to avoid new outbreaks it is necessary to continue controlling the population, “that the People continue to take precautions such as mask use, social distancing, and hand washing. Begin to test population groups, go to the houses to take exams ”, he said.
The specialist also addressed the particularities of the territory and the relationship with the fight against the pandemic from the central authorities. “Chile is not the same everywhere, our region does not border Argentina, but it has two borders, which are Bolivia and Peru, which are flat. In addition, trucks from Brazil enter from the Bolivian side. It is different so you have to worry more about border controls “
“Fortunately, delta cases can be detected quickly because Arica has a laboratory to carry out the analyzes and they are reinforcing the testing and audits where there is a large influx of public. I believe that the authorities are acting well according to the reality of our region “ added.
Finally, the doctor pointed out that in the Arica commune “the vaccination percentage is quite high, even with the booster dose, we are well covered and it means that with vaccinated people the contagion is not so serious and we don’t have anyone in the ICU ”.
