The city of Greifswald bills the climate activists who occupied a power plant last week for the use of the fire brigade. There could be further costs. As a precautionary measure, the power plant was temporarily shut down. The hot water supply and heating failed in 450 households.

A total of six climate activists were involved in the action on Friday last week in Greifswald, in which a power station was occupied and the activists put their lives in danger. Eleven firefighters and five emergency vehicles had to move in. The fire service cost a total of 1,700 euros. This is billed to the environmentalists. Further costs are expected to be added.

The activists’ posters read: “Gas is over”. There was no organization behind it. The self-declared aim of the campaign was to draw attention to the harmful effects of burning natural gas on the climate. In a statement by the participants in the action it said:

“Like all other energy producers, the municipal utilities must become 100 percent renewable as quickly as possible.”

The protest also resulted in the hot water supply and heating failing in 450 households.

All attempts by the managing director of Stadtwerke Greifswald to end the protest with words were unsuccessful. The activists also climbed the chimney, putting their lives in danger. The police spokesman Andrej Krosse:

“The activists are not ready to come voluntarily from the power plant.”

Two activists made it difficult for the police to establish their identity. They smeared their hands so that the fingerprints could not be taken and stained their faces. Only the ordered cleaning by the police brought clarity.

Climate activists also from Greifswald recently drew attention to themselves with a hunger strike. They asked the candidates for chancellor to comply with their demands or they will die from deprivation of food. But their demands met with little hearing.
