As a result of the Taliban’s conquest and the humanitarian emergency in Afghanistan, the European Union will soon have to prepare for substantial refugee movements. The EU foreign affairs officer Josep Borrell announced this to the EU Parliament in Strasbourg.
The people would be on their way if the Taliban allow them, said the EU Foreign Affairs Representative Josep Borrell on Tuesday in front of the EU Parliament in Strasbourg. He added:
“We know that a lot of people want to leave the country.”
Food prices in the crisis country are rising, the financial system is in free fall. According to UN figures, 93 percent of households in Afghanistan do not have enough to eat, which means that basic services are on the brink of collapse. The United Nations estimates that around 3.5 million people have been displaced in Afghanistan, 550,000 of them since the beginning of this year. A drought with poor harvests and little feed for animals also contributed to this.
According to Borrell, it must therefore be clarified now which countries could possibly accept refugee Afghans. Nobody wants the EU’s offers of help to be understood as a kind of invitation. The external representative argued:
“We don’t want to create a pull effect. But we want to protect many Afghan people who deserve our protection.”
