The project to provide the Santa Cruz Local Police with a new police station once again takes a 180 degree turn. There are already four options that had been considered until now once it was concluded that the current headquarters does not meet the minimum conditions of operation and health that a body such as the Local Police needs. Thus, from a possible rehabilitation of the current headquarters, it was passed to the announcement of a megaproject for a police station in Ofra, which also ended up being discarded. The next announcement was that of the purchase of a building or adaptation of a municipal property to house the police station, for, this last year, to point out that the building located in Cabo Llanos, delivered by Antonio Plasencia as payment of part of the civil liability of the Las Teresitas case, it would become the new headquarters of the police force. However, as DIARIO DE NOTIOS has learned, this option has also been discarded. This has been communicated by the City Council to the Local Police unions, which have been informed that the new proposal is to move the police station to the other side of the street, that is, to the Urbanism Management building.
This property, owned by the Santa Cruz City Council, which currently houses, in addition to the Management, Public Services or Infrastructures, among other municipal areas, would thus become the new police station. To do this, as noted in the meeting held with the unions, a series of works will have to be carried out, mainly in the part of the garages, to accommodate the mobile fleet of the Local Police.
According to union sources, this proposal is just that, a proposal, since there is no project, no budget, no dates, or deadlines. “We no longer believe anything,” they point out. The same sources indicate that, in any case, if carried out, it would not be in the short term, and they recall that the current Tres de Mayo facilities do not meet the minimum conditions for police work.
As this newspaper has learned, the transfer of the Local Police to the Urban Planning building would be possible thanks to the fact that the services now located there would in turn be transferred to the municipal headquarters of General Antequera. This last building is now practically finished, after the comprehensive rehabilitation to which it was subjected, and which forced the transfer to Ofra of the officials who carried out their work there. Meanwhile, the Cabo Llanos building, on which it was announced that a project would be commissioned to adapt it, goes from being a police station option, to a more than predictable source of income for the City Council. According to the information that DIARIO DE AVISOS has had access to, the idea being worked on is to put this property up for auction, in which several investors have already been interested. With the sale, the Consistory would gain liquidity to face the years of recovery that still lie ahead.
