The French department store chain Monoprix has not yet attracted any radical political slogans. But now the company has apparently slipped through a product on which “system-critical” slogans can be read – among other things on the subject of the police.

The department store chain Monoprix, founded in Paris in 1893, has had an enormous “shit storm” on social media in the last few days. The trigger was a smoothie with slogans that are less “smooth”. Slogans like “Fuck le System” or, a little less critical of the system, “Free Britney” can be found on the small bottles. But rather a different lettering caused a stir – “ACAB”

The abbreviation stands for “All Cops Are Bastards”, which probably doesn’t need to be translated. The saying, the origin of which is unclear, is often used in youthful subcultures, both in the extreme left and the extreme right spectrum. And it is precisely the “target group of young people” that the smoothie should probably appeal to. The slogans used for this on the smoothie bottle are graphically designed so that they are reminiscent of a sprayed wall of a house. In addition, Monoprix gave the smoothie the name “Rentrée 2021”, which means something like “Start of school in 2021”.

After some cybernauts discovered the smoothie at Monoprix, as expected, a wave of criticism poured out over the company. Monoprix could possibly have sat out the critical remarks on social media, but then the French police union Alliance spoke out and accused the department store chain of “making its money by hating police officers”. This drink is a “smoothie of shame”. This is a “perfect way to destroy relations between the police and the population”.

Unsurprisingly, Monoprix immediately removed the “Shame Smoothie” from its range. The company stated:

“Like you, we do not tolerate this type of message on the products offered in our store. We have therefore notified the supplier concerned and will take the product off the market as soon as possible …”
