Georgian customs officials seize almost half a kilogram of undeclared gold items

TBILISI, September 14 – Sputnik. Georgian customs officials have prevented the import of smuggled gold items into the country at several customs checkpoints of the country, according to a statement on the website of the Revenue Service of the Ministry of Finance of Georgia.

Undeclared gold with a total weight of 224.41 grams and firearms were seized from the cache of a truck driven by an Armenian citizen.

According to the ministry, on the basis of the developed risk profile, the employees of the Customs Risk Department at the Sadakhlo-Avtomobilnaya checkpoint (Georgian-Armenian border) suggested that the Armenian citizen go to the “red corridor” and go through an X-ray scanner. The total value of the detected contraband goods amounted to 37.8 thousand lari.

In addition, undeclared gold jewelry and coins were found at a Georgian citizen at the Sarpi checkpoint (Georgian-Turkish border). The smuggling is estimated at 27.7 thousand lari.

The materials were transferred to the Investigative Service of the Ministry of Finance for further response.

Two more attempts to smuggle gold into Georgia were suppressed at the Tbilisi International Airport. The citizens of Armenia were found to have gold jewelry weighing 279.8 grams. The value of the smuggled gold is estimated at 34.3 thousand lari. That is how much they will have to pay in the form of a fine.
