Anna Westerlund on the children: “We have hero children. They are brave, they are the fruit of a spectacular father"

Anna Westerlund gave an interview to Manuel Luís Goucha, where he spoke for the first time about his partner’s death, Pedro Lima. The conversation was broadcast this Tuesday, the 14th, on the presenter’s program, on TVI.

During the interview, the presenter questioned the ceramist about how the children have dealt with the death of their father. “We have hero children. They are brave, they are the result of a spectacular father. When I broke the news to each of them individually, their immediate concern was with me. And that gave me that strength, because their concern was: ‘Mother, how are you going to live without the father?’ That moment gave me a strength that I can’t explain, but it can only come from this love that we built as a family”.

Anna Westerlund also underlined the importance of talking about mental illness and suicide, something that herself and the actor’s eldest son, João Francisco, 22, have been striving to do. “Pedro’s death was tragic, a surprise, it wasn’t a disease for which we prepared to say goodbye and the way it happened I think is still very much associated with taboos and shame, but at home there was never room for shame, there was room to try to understand”, he said, continuing.

“There was room for pride in their father. Pedro is so structured in them, with the wonderful relationship they had, that nobody takes it away from them. And it is visible how this gives them structure and security. Nothing puts into question the love that the father had for them, the values he passed on to them”, he also said, adding: “Pedro has been present every day since he left. I don’t want them to be traumatized by his death. We’re all going to die, we don’t know how”, going back to stressing the importance of talking about mental illnesses. “There are subjects that, when we talk about them, we talk softly. Of suicide, when we talk about it, we lower our voices, and that makes us unable to move forward. We don’t want to speak softly, we don’t want to be ashamed to talk about this topic”.

In conversation with Manuel Luís Goucha, the ceramist said that the two had thought of getting married when the actor turned 50, which would happen this year. So, before the funeral, he wrote the vows he was going to read at his wedding and read them during that parting moment. “I feel that we will certainly be together. Love brings people together”, stated

On the relationship between father and children, the ceramist highlighted the presence that Pedro Lima has always had in the lives of his five children. “It was inspiring in the way it was present in their lives. He had time for his children, to talk, to take them to school, to water memories”.

Manuel Luís Goucha, who was also a friend of the actor, revealed that for several months he thought about whether he could have done something to avoid the tragic outcome and questioned the widow on whether she had ever felt the same. “There’s a long idea that someone could have saved him”, began by saying the ceramist. “A friend of ours, when he left and I questioned [sobre se tinha falhado] he said to me: ‘You saved Peter for 20 years’, in the sense that those demons were there. He did everything right, sought help. It was his time“he stated.

At the end of the interview, Manuel Luís Goucha questioned the ceramist about what he expected for the future. “I have a little star. The future can only be happy and full of love. Love didn’t go away with Pedro, maybe it even got stronger”, concluded Anna Westerlund.
