Barcelona prepares the red carpet to host one of the most important paddle tennis tournaments in the world. This Tuesday the Estrella Damm Barcelona Master 2021 will begin in which it will mark the return of the World Padel Tour circuit to Spain after carrying out the first two international tests in Cascais (Portugal) and Sardegna (Italy), plus an exhibition in Belgium.
Only hours after the consecration of Franco Stupaczuk and Alex Ruíz in the men’s box and of Gemma Triay and Alejandra Salazar in the women’s section, the tour authorities together with two ‘local’ representatives kicked off the event. The athletes in charge of being in the presentation were Fernando Belasteguín and Marta Marrero, both residents of the Catalan city.
The Palau Sant Jordi will host this fourth Master of the season. This scenario witnessed a historic moment when at the end of 2019 there were a total of 9,558 people in the stands to enjoy the Master Finals, this being the highest record of live spectators of a World Padel Tour contest. In this edition the capacity will be limited by the health situation.
The keys to the Master of Barcelona were already raffled days ago and each couple knows what luck chance gave them. The matches can be seen live through the YouTube channel of World Padel Tour from the quarter-final instance (Friday) onwards.
BELASTEGUÍN – SANYO AND THE REVANCHA AFTER TWO ATYPICAL TOURNAMENTS
The big surprise at the beginning of the second part of the season was given by the Argentines Fernando Belasteguín (# 3) and Daniel Sanyo Gutiérrez (# 4), the second couple seeded for the Barcelona Master, who were eliminated in the round of 32 of the Master of Cascais and in the round of 16 of the Open of Sardegna.
This pair has already won three titles so far this season and they aspired to reduce units with the Spanish Juan Lebrón and Alejandro Galán, current leaders of the world ranking and who have just established themselves in Portugal but fell in the quarterfinals of the Italian tournament against Di Nenno and Navarro.
The draw put Bela / Sanyo before the unbeatable opportunity to take ‘revenge’. In the first phase they will face Adrián Allemandi and Coki Nieto, who were their executioners in Cascais. And if they advance to the round, they could meet Miguel Lamperti and Miguel Yanguas (they will face Matías Díaz and Sánchez Serrano), who have just left them out in Sardegna.
On the other hand, Franco Stupaczuk and Alex Ruíz -the recent champions- will debut this Wednesday in the afternoon against Brazilians Campagnolo and Bergamini, the same day as Federico Chingotto – Juan Tello (vs. Coello – Arroyo) and Tapia – Lima (vs. Fuster – Barahona).
