Opposition TV unveils hidden audio recordings compromising Georgian clergy

TBILISI, September 13 – Sputnik. The State Inspector’s Service of Georgia calls on the investigating authorities to promptly examine all suspicious cases of covert wiretapping and surveillance of citizens, the ministry said in a statement released on Monday.

On the air of the opposition television channel TV Pirveli, audio recordings of conversations between representatives of the Georgian clergy were made public. According to media reports, this information was provided to the opposition TV channels by a certain ex-official of the State Security Service. We are talking about the surveillance of more than 100 clergymen and more than three thousand files of hidden recording.

In a statement, the State Inspector Service notes that recently released audio and video recordings, as well as documentation, raise questions about illegal surveillance and surveillance of various individuals. The department notes that these facts require a timely investigation by the competent investigative body to establish their authenticity.

Meanwhile, not all opposition TV channels agreed to broadcast these recordings live. Thus, the general director of the Mtavari TV channel Nika Gvaramia said that he would not publish the recordings of the conversations of the clergy.

The possible wiretapping of clergymen was commented on by the Public Defender of Georgia Nino Lomjaria. According to her, there is no effective mechanism in the country that would protect citizens from illegal surveillance.

In turn, the chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream party, Irakli Kobakhidze, directly accused the former ruling United National Movement party and a number of media outlets supporting them of “leaking” information and discrediting the church.

According to Metropolitan of Akhalkalaki and Kumurdo, Vladyka Nikoloz (Pachuashvili), who also appears in the published records, these are the intrigues of “evil spirits” that want to turn people against the church. He also calls the state to account.
