The prestigious medical journal ‘EClinicalMedicine’ of the group The Lancet published a report stating that the vaccine Sputnik Light, that is, the first component of Sputnik V against the coronavirus, prevented 78.6% of coronavirus infections in older adults. The results arise from an analysis carried out by the Buenos Aires Ministry of Health in people between 60 and 79 years old.
As expressed by the work published in the medical journal, the information arises from analyzes carried out on 186,581 people between 60 and 79 years old from the Buenos Aires parties of the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA). Of that total, 40,387 had received the first dose of the Sputnik vaccine (which is Sputnik Light) between December 29, 2020, and March 21, 2021.
The main objective was to compare the proportion of confirmed infections, hospitalizations and deaths from Covid in vaccinated and unvaccinated, after 21 days and up to 40 days from the date of vaccination. In this sense, they came to the conclusion that the first dose of the Russian drug prevents 78.6% of infections, 87.6% of hospitalizations and 84.8% of deaths between 21 and 83 days after the vaccination in a population aged 60 to 79 years
However, the report warns that, “without a doubt, the complete vaccination schedule should be the standard of care since it confers maximum effectiveness.” This data, which had been partially advanced by the Buenos Aires government, was capitalized by the Argentine Executive to argue its decision to prioritize the application of the first component and postpone the second dose in order to increase the percentage of inoculated citizens.
As explained Telam, Sputnik Light is the first component (AD26) of the human adenovirus-based Sputnik V vaccine developed by Russia’s Gamaleya Research Center. Last May, the Russian authorities approved the use of the one-dose vaccine against the coronavirus Sputnik Light, after local studies that had shown that it was 79% effective, even against the new variants known until that moment, as announced by the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF).
