One million minors between the ages of 12 and 17 will be vaccinated: Health

One million children and adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17 who have conditions that increase the risk of COVID-19 will be vaccinated, it reported Hugo López-Gatell, Undersecretary of Health, in an interview with the newspaper La Jornada.

Among the ailments suffered by this million minors, identified by Health, are different types of cancer, kidney or liver failure, HIV / AIDS, those who underwent an organ transplant, congenital diseases and others that decrease the immune system.

He assured that the risk of serious COVID, hospitalization and death is greater for this sector of the population under 18 years of age.

“The one who needs the most protection with the vaccine should go first. That doesn’t mean that others don’t matter. Public health takes care of populations and the majority of children and adolescents are healthy people with low to very low risk ”, López-Gatell told La Jornada.

The official ruled out that all children who are overweight be vaccinated, because although this number in Mexico is high, “Extreme obesity is lower than in adults, making it a less frequent cause of complications for COVID-19.”

Regarding children with disabilities, López-Gatell explained that there are different types of disabilities and that some, such as cerebral palsy, increase the risk. For this reason, he assured, the national vaccination plan will be reformulated to define who requires the vaccine.

He said that minors who obtain a protection that obliges Health to apply the immunization will continue to be vaccinated.

A few weeks ago, the undersecretary said that vaccinating minors who obtained an amparo removed the vaccine from another person with greater risk, which provoked criticism of the official.

However, López-Gatell assured La Jornada that he supports his saying.

“There are vaccines and a population to protect. If they are put in the population with the lowest risk, it is a loss of opportunity to protect those who are most at risk ”.

Although he said, the attacks are part of “a political attack plan.”

Families and civil organizations considered that the Ministry of Health had been omission, since it did not have a defined strategy for people with disabilities, between 18 and 39 years old, to receive the vaccine as a priority group.

Most had to wait their turn by age, regardless of their condition.

Application until there is scientific evidence

López-Gatell said that the Mexican government bought vaccines for the entire population from one year onwards, but that they will be applied to minors until there is international scientific consensus.

Like a third dose for adults.

“About the third dose, there are documents from international health agencies and they say that there is no scientific evidence that it is required. None of the manufacturers have published results of their clinical trials, not even in Israel, where the study is ongoing ”, the official explained.
