Downer for Ronald Koeman and FC Barcelona

Barcelona hoped Braithwaite’s injury would pass with regular treatments, but that has turned out not to be the case. According to Spanish media, the Dane will be sidelined for three to four months. Barcelona itself does not specify a term.

Braithwaite has been a starting player in all three league games played for Barcelona so far. He scored twice.

“I wonder where we stand exactly”

Koeman sees the game against Bayern as an interesting test for FC Barcelona. “We have had changes in the squad and we need time. But in football there is not much time and the game against Bayern is an interesting one from which we can draw conclusions about where we are.”

“We know very well that Bayern is a great team with experience and many individual qualities,” said Koeman. “It will be a tough game, but we are looking forward to being in the Champions League and we want to get a good result in the opening game.”

More than a year ago, Barcelona lost 8-2 to Bayern in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. That led to the resignation of Quique Setién. Shortly afterwards, the Barcelona board appointed Koeman as his successor. “We are talking about a game that involved many of the current players,” the Dutch coach said on Monday. “Now we have the opportunity to turn that result around. We have to be strong, maintain a high tempo and play in our own style. We have great players with a lot of technical skills that can cause problems at Bayern.”
