The Malbrán Institute reported this Saturday that three children who are among the students of a Buenos Aires school who had been tested for a covid-19 outbreak tested positive for the Delta variant.

“Given the journalistic versions of a possible outbreak of covid-19 in a school in the City of Buenos Aires, the PAIS Consortium and the Malbrán Institute report that three confirmed cases have been notified at the moment, to the National Health Surveillance System variant Delta, “they said in a statement.

The isolates correspond to three minors, two of 7 years and one of 9.

The confirmation of the Delta variant was carried out based on the partial sequencing of the Spike protein and the constellation of mutations associated with the Delta variant was analyzed, confirming the presence of these mutations in all the samples.

In addition, a silent mutation (2049G> A) that is shared by all cases was detected and would be an indication that they share a common origin. Currently, the sequencing of the complete genomes is in process, to carry out the evolutionary studies that will allow to confirm if all the cases belong to the same outbreak.

The health teams of the City of Buenos Aires are conducting the epidemiological investigation to determine the transmission chains and the pertinent outbreak controls.
