Equipping the Navy with new Project 12700 Alexandrite mine-fighting ships is seriously strengthening Russia’s defense capabilities, experts say. In St. Petersburg, at the Sredne-Nevsky shipyard, the keel-laying ceremony of the next vessel of this type, which will become the ninth in the series, took place. The Ministry of Defense plans to order at least ten more such minesweepers. The ships of the Alexandrite project are designed for mine protection of naval bases, coastal maritime territories, as well as escorting ships during a sea passage. Such vessels have a unique, the world’s largest hull made of monolithic fiberglass. The use of this material, according to experts, makes it difficult to detect the vessel by submarines, torpedo homing systems and sea mine sensors, which makes it more efficient and safer.
