River reaped a victory against Vélez

River returned to the path of triumph. Marcelo Gallardo’s team left behind a negative run of three consecutive defeats and won 2-0 against Vélez for the sixth date of the Professional League tournament. With this victory achieved at the Monumental stadium, the Millionaire arrives with a better face to the second leg of the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores against Atlético Mineiro (he lost 1-0 at home in the first leg).

The illusion of the River fans was lit at the minute of play, when Braian Romenro had the first dangerous play of the game. The forward ran into a good cover from goalkeeper Lucas Hoyos, but his intervention seemed to show a brave and lucid Millionaire team in attack. However, that trend did not continue and soon the premises began to blur.

Without weight in the middle and with a disconnected offensive line, those led by Marcelo Gallardo were far from being that fast and voracious team. The inaccuracies were permanent and Vélez took the opportunity to stand with greater determination. Even with little, the Fort was enough to be somewhat clearer in its intentions in attack.

Equality was the fairest result after a poor first stage, in which neither of the two teams came to meet the expectations that had been deposited both collectively and individually. Both were in debt in the face of the complement.

That account began to be settled at the beginning of the second half. Already at minute Milton Casco hit the void on the right and Francisco Ortega lowered him at the entrance to the area. It was a penalty that referee Pablo Echavarría did not hesitate to collect. Before the departure of Gonzalo Montiel, the player who took charge of the shots from the twelve steps, Enzo Fernández took charge of the shot and did not miss. The midfielder was right and made it 1-0 with his first goal with the Millionaire shirt.

The conquest changed the face of a River that seemed renewed by the changes (Rollheiser for Álvarez and Paradela for Palavecino). In fact, the locals were close to increasing the account over 8 ‘with a great pass from Casco to Braian Romero, who defined crossed and the ball came just to the side of Hoyos’ right post.

The passivity of Vélez, who never found that facet that he had shown in the first part, facilitated the process for Gallardo’s men who, even without shining, were able to seal a victory more than necessary in the spirit. It is that, after three defeats in a row, the Millionaire needed to win to arrive with the spirits on the rise to the rematch against Atlético Mineiro in Brazil.

The goal of tranquility came already in injury time. Braian Romero took advantage of a slip by Miguel Brizuela and came face to face with Hoyos to define and score the 2-0 that secured the three points for the Núñez team.

In this way, River reaches ten points in the standings and is three below Colón de Santa Fe, who so far is the only leader in the competition.

El Fortín, for its part, cannot get out of its bad moment, since it was eliminated in the round of 16 of the Copa Libertadores, accumulates seven games without knowing the victory (four defeats and three equalities) and does not score a goal for 635 minutes (Thiago Almada, in the 5-0 win against Gimnasia in the group stage of the Professional League Cup). Mauricio Pellegrino’s men have only three points and are second to last in the standings.
