If confirmed, the third dose will only be for risk groups / Télam

Faced with the threat posed by the circulation of the Delta variant of the coronavirus, which has been shaking even countries that believed they had the pandemic under control, the national government is considering applying a third dose of the Covid vaccines. This was announced by the Minister of Health, Carla Vizzotti, commenting that this week the application of a reinforcement will be evaluated for the groups at higher risk due to age or health problems.

“A strategic population will surely need a reinforcement and that is not because vaccines do not work or are not good, but because it is the logic in relation to respiratory diseases and vaccines. It is something that we are evaluating after this stage of vaccination of prioritized adolescents, adolescents in general and second doses. This week there is an immunization commission where the (issue) of reinforcement will be discussed ”, the Minister of Health told C5N in an interview

If this initiative is approved, Argentina would join a small group of countries that are already applying reinforcements to those who received two doses, such as France, Germany or Chile, so far the only case in the region.

“There are countries that applied vaccines that had a lower efficacy and now have a much faster need than Argentina to think of some booster to complement the immunity of that vaccine, which is 50% effective,” said Vizzotti, noting that “those scenarios are particular and different ”from that of our country.

For now “we have to advance the second doses in August and sustain the care. It is not that the pandemic is over, but rather that we are in a new stage in which we change the parameters, “said the minister, noting that, after ten consecutive weeks of the decline in infections in the country,” the health scenario changed. “

In this sense, Vizzotti also highlighted the delay in the circulation of the Delta variant in Argentina, contrasting this situation with European countries, such as the United Kingdom, where the new strain virtually exploded.

“We are already delaying the entry of the Delta. It is an achievement that we are not putting enough value on. Variants compete for circulation. You have to swell for Manaus ”, exemplified the national official to point out the danger of the Delta (of India) in the face of the rest of the circulating strains in our country.

But although delayed, it seems inevitable that the dreaded Delta variant will soon circulate with greater prominence among the community. Hence, the national government hopes to achieve the application of 7 million second doses during August in order to have a good “cushion” of vaccinated with a complete schedule when that happens.

“Almost 60% of the population started the scheme, in people over 18 it is exceeding 80%, and when you see it in people over 50 it is exceeding 90%”, Vizzotti reviewed by way of balance

“Vaccines for respiratory diseases not only do not generate immunity to prevent 100% of infection but also do not have such a long duration in time”

During the interview with the television channel, the Minister of Health also spoke of the possibility of vaccination against Covid becoming something regular.

“Vaccines for this type of respiratory virus not only do not generate immunity to prevent infection 100% but also do not have such a long duration in time,” said Vizzotti, giving as an example the influenza vaccine that is applied every year.

“Thinking about periodic vaccinations is something that was always on the agenda, especially in people who are at higher risk of complications or have a less robust immune system,” he stressed.
