A member of the regional parliament of the Kamchatka Region in Russia’s Far East has committed to murder. Igor Redkin is ranked 20th in Forbes’ 100 richest civil servants in the country. The billionaire claims to have shot the victim by mistake.

On August 2nd, a tragedy broke out in the village of Osernowski in the south of the Russian Kamchatka Peninsula. A resident suffered a gunshot wound in the stomach that Monday evening while he and his relative were collecting scrap metal at the local rubbish dump. The 30-year-old was promoted to a medical center where he succumbed to his injury. The Investigation Committee opened an investigation to determine who fired the fatal shot.

The alleged killer did not come to light until a week later. On Tuesday, a deputy from the Legislative Assembly of the Kamchatka Region let through the local news agency Kamtschatka-Inform know that he was likely responsible for the murder. Igor Redkin described the sequence of events as follows:

“That evening in the Osernowski settlement I found out that a bear was wandering around in the garbage dump there, which could harm the locals. I took up a gun to scare him away. I shot the bear at dusk.”

The 55-year-old also said that he only found out later that a local had suffered a fatal gunshot wound near the village. Redkin was remorseful, dropped his membership in the ruling United Russia party and withdrew his candidacy in this year’s regional elections.

Previously, the newspaper had Kommersant citing informed sources that Redkin may be behind the murder. Eyewitnesses told the newspaper that on that fateful day the MP drove around the village intoxicated and shot around from his rifle, which cost around 35,000 euros, with a sighting device. A case from the rare carbine was discovered at the scene of the crime. There are at most three weapons of this type in the region. Neither Russia’s investigative committee nor Redkin himself wanted to comment on the incident until Tuesday.

According to information from the magazine Forbes the alleged perpetrator’s annual income in 2020 was just under 8.3 million euros. Thus, he was ranked 20th in the ranking of the richest state officials and MPs in the country. In 2019, he was in ninth place in the ranking with an income of just under 16.7 million euros. The local entrepreneur had been a Member of Parliament of the Kamchatka Region since 2007.
