Faced with health measures this summer, the reaction of my adolescent patients may have surprised me – BLOG

PSYCHOLOGY – “It will not be easy, on vacation, to respect the sanitary rules”, says Élodie, mother of Alan and Sybille, teenagers. “We’re all tired, so we’re going to relax a little … a lot, even.”

His daughter retorts: “You always say that I can’t stand the constraints. For a year, I’ve been living them better than you. And I move forward! ”. His son added: “In fact, it’s mostly a problem for you adults! We adapt. If the rules are clear from the start, then things work out … We don’t just do anything. We protect ourselves and we protect others … And if you were vaccinated, that would make our life easier! ”

Like them, many adolescents have understood that compliance with sanitary measures involves more than daily constraints. This makes it possible to rediscover the other, to give them new attention. “You get off your navel!” Says Lorraine, “It feels good”. Bastien says: “Great luxury is having a space where you can breathe in peace, without anyone and without a mask. Before, my sister and my parents entered my room without knocking. Now I can’t stand it anymore. Respect!”.

“There, I breathe!”

This situation can even facilitate family life, since the territories are now demarcated: “Now we know who is doing what, we cannot be three at a time in the kitchen, nor two in the bathroom. Gone are the endless discussions on the organization of the day … ”.

This clarifies everyone’s place. “Finally, we pay more attention to others and we feel less alone. Individualism, we don’t want it anymore! ”Says Loïc.

Another advantage of this context: for many adolescents who dread fusion and intrusion, it is often synonymous with relief: “I no longer have to kiss everyone in the morning! The “kisses, kisses” mode, before breakfast, that tired me! There, I breathe! ”. Recurring expression in my practice for three weeks …

In the end, today’s adolescents often have very responsible attitudes. New generation who learn from their experiences. Rather encouraging for the future, no?
