Mexico.- In the last update of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Secretary of Health registered 515 new deaths due to the respiratory disease adding 244 thousand 248 deaths in total since the beginning of the emergency in Mexico.

The report indicated that in the last 24 hours 20 thousand 018 new infections by coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 were confirmed, adding 2 million 964 thousand 244 cases.

In addition, for the fourth consecutive day there was a record of active cases with 148,800, a figure that exceeded the 144,176 reported the previous day.

With these records, Mexico is the fourth country in the world with the most deaths from covid-19, behind United States, Brazil and India, and has returned to the fifteenth in number of confirmed infections, according to the count of the Johns Hopkins University.

Mexico is in the middle of the third wave of covid-19, and for weeks it has registered days with more than 19 thousand daily infections, figures that were not seen since the peak of the second wave, last January.

In addition, health authorities believe that, based on the death certificates, the pandemic has left more than 350,000 deaths in the country and estimate that Mexico actually accumulates 3,165,888 cases of contagion.

Of this number, 148,800 are active cases, which have presented symptoms during the last 14 days and represent 4.7% of the total.

While since the beginning of the pandemic, 2 million 312 thousand 326 people have recovered.

The average occupancy of general beds in Mexican hospitals is 51% and 44% for intensive care beds, the latter figure increased two points compared to the previous day.

With regard to deaths, Mexico City – the focus of the pandemic – accounts for 19% of all deaths nationwide, that is, almost one in every five deaths.

On Friday, the authorities reported that from August 9 to 22, of the 32 states of the country, seven will be at an epidemiological red light (maximum risk), including Mexico City; 15 in orange (high risk), nine in yellow (medium risk) and only one in green (low risk).

In the report, the authorities also indicated that so far the vaccination program, which includes all those over 18 years of age, has administered 71.6 million doses of the vaccine against covid-19, adding 839 thousand 510 in the Thursday day.

The report also specified that 27.13 million people have completed the full vaccination scheme, out of 126 million inhabitants that the country has.

According to Hugo López-Gatell, manager of the pandemic in Mexico, the implementation of vaccines in the country has managed to reduce deaths from coronavirus, since currently 8 out of 100 people lose their lives due to covid-19, and prior at inoculation the figure rose to 40 out of 100.
