The great-great-grandfather of Viktor Nagy He was a renowned painter, one of the most important in Hungary, one of his paintings was sold for more than a million euros. Nagy is therefore a member of a fine family. And that’s why he could have dedicated himself to living life, to art, to managing his money or even to a pleasant sport, like his little brother Daniel, who competes in the World Touring Car. But no. Viktor Nagy chose water polo and, in water polo, he chose to be a goalkeeper, a strange decision that already showed that he was a special guy: this Sunday Spain discovered him (9-5).
Nagy was the culprit of the defeat of the selection in the fight for the bronze of the Tokyo Games. His performance was antological with eight saves on 13 pitches, most of them in the second half of the game. After Alberto Munarriz established the 5-5 and both teams went to rest, Nagy denied any Spanish option to get on the podium. Not a goal in the last two quarters, in 20 minutes, a team in depression. They all tried, of course they tried, and they all found the goalkeeper: Munarriz himself, lvaro Granados, Bernat Sanahuja, Felipe Perrone …
At the end of the game, in fact, there was no drama or even tears in a Spanish team still in ‘shock’ by what had happened. He could have fallen with a goal in the last second like that of the Serbian Filip Filipovic in the semifinals, but the players never imagined that they would suddenly stop competing. In the third quarter, Nagy’s saves did not yet lead to despair (6-5), but as the minutes ticked by and the blocking became unshakable, spirits plummeted.
A goal of Daniel Angel In the absence of almost three minutes (8-5) it was the sentence and the only thing left to do was to rush desperately against Nagy’s goalkeeper, with everything, even leaving the cow itself. There was no way. The painter’s great-great-grandson, a special guy, left the team without the bronze it deserved during the tournament. Despite this, this generation, full of young people, who had three consecutive finals in the last three tournaments, has the rope to reach the podium at the Paris 2024 Games with options.
