Mexico.- The Ministry of Health registered during its last update on the Covid-19 pandemic in Mexico a new record of infections during the third wave with 21 thousand 569 cases in 24 hours throughout the national territory.

Thus, Mexico registered the second highest number in the number of infections since the coronavirus pandemic began in Mexico, when 22,339 cases were recorded on January 21.

So far the Health Secretary adds a total of 2 million 922 thousand 663 cases, in addition to 618 new deaths, reaching 243 thousand 165 deaths, in the middle of the third wave of the pandemic.

In addition, for the second consecutive day there was a record of active cases, with 138,096, a figure that exceeded the 130,534 reported the previous day, the maximum in the emergency.

With these records, Mexico is the fourth country in the world with the most deaths from covid-19, behind the United States, Brazil and India, and has returned to the fifteenth in number of confirmed infections, according to the Johns Hopkins University count.

For several weeks, Mexico has been in the middle of the third wave of covid-19, with several days registering more than 19,000 daily infections, figures that were not seen since the peak of the second wave, last January.

In addition, health authorities believe that, based on the death certificates, the pandemic has actually left more than 350,000 dead in the country and they estimate that Mexico actually accumulates 3,123,084 cases of contagion.

Of this number, 138,096 are active cases, which have presented symptoms during the last 14 days and represent 4.4% of the total.

While since the beginning of the pandemic, 2,283,539 people have recovered.

The average occupancy of general beds in Mexican hospitals is 51% and 42% for intensive care beds.

With regard to deaths, Mexico City —the focus of the pandemic— accounts for 19% of all deaths nationwide; that is, almost one in every five deaths.

Vaccination advances

In the report, the authorities also indicated that so far the vaccination program, which includes all those over 18 years of age, has administered 69.82 million doses of the vaccine against covid-19, adding 975,304 on the day of the Wednesday.

The report also specified that 26.5 million people have completed the complete vaccination scheme, out of 126 million inhabitants that the country has.

Since December 23, 2020, the country has received a total of 89.2 million doses of the British AstraZeneca, the Russian Sputnik V, the American Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson, in addition to the Chinese CanSino and Sinovac.
