As of today, Spanish sport has a new normal that will govern the stadiums. The Ministry of Health and the autonomous communities have reached an agreement to implement a series of measures – traffic lights, use of a mask, exits and entrances, etc. – that will mark the return of the public to sporting events multitudinous.

The document, debated and approved this Wednesday between the Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, and the health advisers within the Interterritorial Council, proposes a series of specific measures for sports competitions throughout the country, which They will be valid from August 13, 2021.

Limitation of capacity, staggered entrances and exits, prohibition of consuming drinks or meals … The agreement concludes with several points to follow with the aim of gradually reopening the stadiums for fans; but without this implying another source of contagion in the middle of the fifth wave of coronavirus.

All in all, the protocol will be reassessed on August 29, when new measures or even the lifting of others will be considered again, depending on the epidemiological situation and the progress of the vaccination campaign against covid-19 in Spain.

What will be the capacity allowed?

A mask must be worn at all times and the interpersonal distance of 1.5 meters between the attendees must be guaranteed, and the maximum capacity at mass sporting events will be:

  • Of the 40% of the stadium’s capacity outdoors.
  • Of the 30% of the total capacity for closed venues.

Who will be able to attend?

Despite the fact that in the initial draft the proposal stated that fans should be “exclusively subscribers”, in the agreement this Wednesday, access to the local audience, although emphasizing that “preferably” are paid.

This decision, as explained by Darias, is taken fundamentally to avoid mobility between territories in mass sporting events that usually bring together hundreds of people.

No audience in training

The trainings will be “preferably” without an audience and, in any case, within the capacity limits provided.

Will it be possible to eat and / or drink?

No. Minister Carolina Darias has specified that the intake of any food or drink will be terminally prohibited, except for water.

You will not be able to smoke

Nor will smoking or the use of other tobacco derivatives, such as electronic cigarettes, be allowed.

Will these be the toughest measures in events?

No. Health has specified that this protocol is a common minimum of measures to be adopted throughout the territory, from which new restrictions may be added (but not removed) until the Interterritorial Health Council meets again at the end of August.
