The head of the list of the Novos Tempos coalition to the Lisbon City Council, Carlos Moedas, defended this Monday that he presents “a list of excellence” to the next local authorities, capable of removing the current mayor, Fernando Medina, from power.
We are very happy. It’s a great day to bring here the lists of this coalition to remove, once and for all, Fernando Medina from power in Lisbon”, said Carlos Moedas (PSD) in statements to journalists at the Palace of Justice, where he handed over the lists of candidates for the Novos Tempos coalition (PSD/CDS-PP/PPM/MPT/Aliança) to local authorities in the elections scheduled for 26 September.
The candidate considered having “a list of excellence, with people who come from the world outside of politics, but also with people from politics with a lot of value”.
Asked if a second place would be a reason for celebration, Carlos Moedas said: “We’re going to win Lisbon. And nothing will distract me from this mission of winning Lisbon”.
We’ve been out on the street, seeing people and feeling people. And what I feel in people is that people want to change Lisbon. They are tired of a long-standing socialist governance, a governance of ‘friendship’, a governance that has not really changed Lisbon for the better.”, he stated.
And, therefore, what we need is not, as Fernando Medina says, more Lisbon, but we need better Lisbon. And this is the best Lisbon we’ll get”, reinforced.
The candidate also highlighted that he has a “great team”, with different skills, “ranging from health, urbanism, the environment”, in order to respond to all the city’s problems.
Carlos Moedas also rejected that there is an unease within the coalition, since the CDS-PP leadership decided not to include the current centrist councilor João Gonçalves Pereira on the lists, a decision that drew criticism from former party vice-president Adolfo Mesquita Nunes and deputy João Almeida.
There is no discomfort, there is no division, there is a union. It is this union of the parties that today somehow begins and unites us to remove Fernando Medina from Lisbon City Hall”, creased.
Nothing was imposed, it’s a list that was discussed, that was talked about, that obviously there are party choices, but that were choices that I also wanted and then there are independent choices that these were choices that I made directly”, he added.
The executive of the Lisbon Chamber, chaired by Fernando Medina, is currently made up of eight elected by the PS (which includes Citizens for Lisbon), one by the BE (which has a governance agreement with the socialists), four by the CDS-PP, two from the PSD and two from the CDU.
In the race for the presidency of the municipality, the candidacies of Fernando Medina (PS/Livre coalition), Carlos Moedas (PSD/CDS-PP/PPM/MPT/Aliança), João Ferreira (CDU), Bruno Horta Soares (IL) have so far been announced ), Nuno Graciano (Chega), Beatriz Gomes Dias (BE), Manuela Gonzaga (PAN), Tiago Matos Gomes (Volt) and João Patrocínio (Ergue-te).
