The Badalona City Council, governed by the popular Xavier García Albiol, has made the decision this Monday of cancel the play ‘El gran comedian’, scheduled for next season and directed by actor Joel Joan. According to the statement, the reason for the cancellation is “the latest controversies starring the actor on social networks.”
In recent days, Joel Joan, whose pro-independence views have already sparked more controversy, had criticized a bar in Barcelona for offering the menu only in Spanish and had posted a video in which he appeared to be drunk.
Popular sources have limited themselves to pointing out that “the suspension of this work is solely and exclusively consequence of public behavior of its protagonist in recent days, incompatible with the programming of a municipal theater “.
Criticisms from ERC
For his part, the local leader of ERC, Àlex Montornès, has described the PPC veto as “very serious”, reproaching the PPC for making use of “political” and not “technical” criteria.
Meanwhile, Joel Joan has also replied on social networks to the prohibition of the work: “In my private time I made a meal with friends and drank as happens every day on vacation in all places. Do you censor me because I did an Instagram? But isn’t it a leading country in freedom and democracy? Did I miss something?
