The president of the Junta de Extremadura, Guillermo Fernandez Vara, has asked at the XXIV Conference of Presidents held this Friday in Salamanca to reflect on the suitability of perpetuating the mask in winter, that is, to make it mandatory every year from December to March.

The socialist’s proposal is due to Covid-19 but not exclusively. Taking advantage of the fact that the population has ‘made’ use of this element until 2020 almost exclusively in hospitals, the idea is to reduce infections and mortality from other causes.

In fact, the experts confirm and agree, the masks worked last winter against the new coronavirus but also against influenza or childhood viruses such as RSV, which, in the case of the latter, only showed their face when the mandatory nature of the masks decreased. .

Pandemic Law

It was last Wednesday, July 21, when the Congress of Deputies eliminated the mandatory use of a mask outdoors whenever a distance of one and a half meters is kept, contrary to the generalized opinion among the communities in the middle of the fifth wave.

“Before the mask, in Spain 15,000 people died in winter from the flu, 50,000 were admitted to hospitals and 3,000 to the ICU. With the mask, infections of winter respiratory viruses have almost disappeared. Wouldn’t it be worth discussing its use in winter ?, Fernández Vara tweeted.

This Thursday, in an interview in Cope, the Extremaduran president defended the need for “an organic law to deal with pandemics in Spain” once that of Covid-19 has been overcome.
