Egypt.- The Delta variant of the coronavirus generated an increase in cases in 15 countries in the Middle East, Maghreb, Africa and Asia, which are confronted a “fourth wave” with the majority of the population not vaccinated, the WHO warned.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the Delta variant, which was first detected in India, is present in 15 of the 21 countries of the Eastern Mediterranean region of this UN agency, which spans from Morocco to Pakistan.

“The circulation of the Delta variant favors an increase in cases of covid-19 and deaths (from the virus) in an increasing number from countries in the WHO Eastern Mediterranean region, “the agency said in a statement.

“The majority of new cases and hospitalized patients are unvaccinated people. Now the fourth wave of COVID-19 occurs in this region, “said Ahmed al Mandhara, head of the Eastern Mediterranean office of the WHO.

Positive cases increased by 55 percent and deaths by 15 percent in a month in this region, which registered during this period 310 thousand infections and 3,500 deaths per week.

In countries like Tunisia, with the highest death toll in North Africa, this new wave is wreaking havoc and resuscitation services are practically overwhelmed and oxygen cylinders are lacking.

The WHO also showed its concern due to the fact that only “5.5 percent of the region’s population is fully vaccinated.”
