CINEMA – Sales of cinema tickets have collapsed in a week, since the entry into force of the health pass for places of culture, with the exception of those for “Kaamelott: First part” by Alexandre Astier which brought together more than a million spectators during its first week of operation, indicates this Wednesday July 28 CBO Box office.
With 1,015,247 tickets sold, the film adaptation by the actor and director of his cult series achieved the second best start of the year after “Fast & Furious 9” (1,301,589 admissions in the first week).
A “superb start”, greeted on Twitter by Nicolas de Tavernost, the boss of the M6 group of which the distributor of the film, SND is part. The film alone gathered 41% of the market share.
-81% pour “Fast and Furious 9”, -71% pour “Black Widow”
Expected by fans for a dozen years, Alexandre Astier’s feature film follows the hit series “Kaamelott” on M6 and is expected to be the first of three films. On television, the director told, for six seasons, the story of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table in a first humorous tone in small sketches, before taking a more tragic turn in longer formats.
Just a week after the introduction of the health pass in movie theaters, ticket sales collapsed.
As proof, the ninth installment of the motorized saga with Vin Diesel (“Fast & Furious”) shows only 248,852 new entries in one week, ie a drop of 81%, after a booming start. Another big American production, “Black Widow”, the last Marvel starring Scarlett Johansson, saw its admissions fall by 71% in one week and is now in fourth place at the box office.
The number of tickets sold for the Palme d’Or “Titane” by Julia Ducournau also shows a sharp drop, by 35%, with 57,184 admissions. Since its release, it has totaled 145,000 admissions.
And as the figures below of the top five performing films show over the past seven days, “Kaamelott” is therefore the only one resisting the collapse in ticket sales:
- “Kaamelott – First section ”: 1,015,247 entries (new) – copies: 807
- “Fast & Furious 9”: 248,852 entries (cumulative 2nd week 1,550,441) – copies 756
- “Space Jam – New Era”: 182,763 entries (new) – copies: 463
- “Black Widow”: 129,821 entries (cumulative 3rd week 1,479,510) – copies: 649
- “The Croods 2: A New Era”: 120,040 entries (cumulative 3rd week 908,886) – copies 967
This Wednesday, however, the government promised that it would be “present” to the world of culture, which suffers as a whole, beyond just cinemas, since the entry into force of the health pass.
Immediate consequence of the health pass
Representatives of several cultural sectors (cinema, live shows, museums, etc.) met at the end of the morning with Minister of Culture Roselyne Bachelot and Minister of Economy Bruno Le Maire. And even before this meeting, the latter had declared on RTL that the government would respond “present” to help companies whose activity will be penalized by the health pass.
However, no concrete announcement was made during this meeting. Deeming “stigmatizing” the entry into force of the sanitary pass in these places before cafes and restaurants for example, several organizations representing entertainment and leisure professionals had even seized the Council of State, the highest court of the administrative order. French, urgently, to request the cancellation of this measure. A request that was rejected Monday evening.
For professionals in the sector, the effects of the measure were however immediate: “For us, the drop in attendance is massive and goes beyond 50%”, told AFP Marc-Olivier Sebbag, general delegate of the National Federation of French Cinemas. “There is no doubt to be had: this decrease is the direct consequence of the introduction of the health pass.”
