The 29-year-old athlete has been struggling with back problems for some time and previously indicated that for that reason she probably would not take action in all parts for which she had qualified.
Schippers will now focus on the 4×100-meter relay and the 200-meter, in which she won silver in Rio five years ago.
In Rio, Schippers did participate in the 100 meters and reached the final. She finished fifth in that. Her personal best is 10.81, set at the 2015 World Cup in Beijing. At that time she achieved silver at the time.
In recent years, however, Schippers has not achieved her top times. Schippers was therefore not a medal candidate for Tokyo in the 100 meters.
In June, Schippers still raced to the Dutch title in the 100 meters. “I can still run fast. I still have the talent and I still want to go for it, but my body doesn’t quite want it right now,” she said at the time. “And that’s hard to accept. I really want to do everything I can and I will always keep fighting, no matter what.”
Schippers would be in action for the first time in Tokyo on Friday. Then at 02:00 (Dutch time) the series of the 100 meters is on the program. The first round of the 200 meters is Monday night, at 03:38.
