The Argentine soccer team was eliminated from the Tokyo Olympic Games, by drawing today with Spain 1 to 1 in a match valid for the third and last date of Group C, in which they had beaten Egypt and lost with Australia .
The match was played at the Saitama Stadium and the goals were scored by Mikel Merino for Spain and Tomás “Toto” Belmonte for Argentina, at 21 and 42 minutes of the second half, respectively.
In the other Group C match, Egypt beat Australia 2-0 and advanced alongside Spain to the quarterfinals.
With these results, Spain won the group with six units, in the quarterfinals they will play against Ivory Coast (second in Group D), followed by Egypt with four and +1 in goals (now they will face Brazil, first in D), Argentina with four and a balance of -1 and last Australia with three.
Spain was superior to Argentina with greater possession of the ball, it was more judicious and compact in all its lines and if it did not win it was due to lack of efficiency and the good work of goalkeeper Jeremías Ledesma.
In the end Batista’s team with heart and mettle managed to equalize the result although they could not qualify after the initial defeat against the Australians.
