Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro assured today that “Argentines are fleeing to Brazil” and that a victory by the opposition Luiz Inácio Lula da SIlva in next year’s elections would be the product of “fraud”, in a new series of accusations launched without evidence in front of his followers at the Palacio de la Alvorada.
“Look what happens when the left returns to power. In 2019 I anticipated it. The Argentines are already fleeing to Brazil. The Brazilians, where will they escape?” Bolsonaro said in a speech to followers at the presidential residence.
The far-right, investigated by the Supreme Court for a corruption scandal linked to the purchase of vaccines against the coronavirus, again cited an alleged movement of Argentines to leave for Brazil for the second time in a week after citing accounts of alleged Argentines living in the coast of the state of San Pablo.
A Bolsonarista radio station, Jovem Pan, broadcast a report on an Argentine who arrived by land from Bolivia in Brazil illegally. Bolsonaro used that example from Argentina after having failed to publicly support the reelection of Mauricio Macri in 2019 and is now, since March, behind in the polls for the 2022 election.
Lula appears as the favorite in the polls, after his convictions were overturned due to the judicial persecution demonstrated by the Supreme Federal Court. In this context, Bolsonaro said that Lula “is against the democratic vote” for not supporting him in the request to change the electoral system with an electronic ballot box that has been in force since 1996 and that allowed the election of the head of state and his three children.
“The same people who got Lula out of jail are going to count the votes and that is why they are against electronic voting controlled by the paper vote,” said the president, who announced that on Thursday he will show cases of fraud from the 2014 election .
Bolsonaro also said that “there has been no corruption in Brazil for two years,” although he admitted that he is “being accused” of this crime by the Federal Police “for a vaccine that was not bought.”
The president launched accusations since last week to the entire opposition political arc while the investigation against him about prevaricate in a fraudulent contract that finally did not prosper to acquire, through intermediaries of the Ministry of Health, the Covaxin vaccine, a scandal that involves officials who are military.
Bolsonaro said that he can walk around the country while Lula “cannot go out to have a drink at a bar because he is insulted and they say he has 49% intention to vote.”
The comment came after the Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper published that the Workers’ Party recommended increasing Lula’s security when he begins to travel the country to strengthen his eventual candidacy next year.
