As a protest, the women of the Norwegian national beach handball team wore longer sports pants than the previously required panties. The fine followed promptly. The US singer Pink is now behind the team and wants to take the punishment.
The players of the Norwegian women’s team recently wore slightly longer sports shorts instead of the mandatory bikini bottoms in a duel at the European Championship. According to a decision by the European Handball Federation, they have to pay a fine of 1500 euros for “inappropriate clothing”.
Now US singer Pink has expressed her support for the Norwegian national team of beach handball players.
Norwegian association president shows solidarity
“I am very proud of the Norwegian beach handball players who are protesting against the very sexist rules governing their ‘uniform'”, the 41-year-old wrote on Twitter on Sunday. She would be happy to pay the fine that the association had imposed on the team.
“The European handball federation should have to pay a fine for sexism,” continued the singer. The world association IHF stipulates that women must wear tight-fitting bikini bottoms. Men, on the other hand, are allowed to wear shorts that end at least four inches above the knee.
Apparently the protest by the Norwegian women’s team was said to have been a “spontaneous action”, the national player Katinka Haltvik revealed. The President of the Norwegian Handball Federation, Kare Geir Lio, has already stood behind the team. “Of course we would pay any fine,” he announced. It is important “that there is a free choice within a standardized framework”: “We are all in the same boat.”
