The governor of Puebla, Miguel Barbosa, made the mistake of meddling in the lawsuit of individuals who are disputing the Mary Street Jenkins Foundation and authorizing his police to seize the facilities of the University of Las Américas to dismiss the rector Luis Ernesto Derbez and impose his friend (former co-religionist in the PRD) Armando Ríos Piter.

Without the courts having reached a final resolution, the president took the side of those who do not know the patronage whose management brings the institution created by the controversial William Jenkins out of the heirs.

The problem, for now, affected not only the classes of its 10 thousand students, but the well-deserved prestige that the UDLAP (located in San Andrés Cholula) has been gaining among the country’s private universities and which is classified as a Level VI Institution. , in the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools-Commission on Colleges, which means the highest recognition (accreditation shows that the university has a firm commitment to educational quality and is supported by the best processes of learning, evaluation, continuous improvement and with values of integrity, transparency and accountability). The embarrassing crisis traps her in the reaffirmation process in that body for the period 2015-2025 for the doctorate, master’s and bachelor’s degrees.

That is why the manifesto issued yesterday by academics, university authorities (in office or in the past), alumni and personalities in “support of legality, in defense of the UDLAP, but also of other institutions that could be threatened” matters a lot.

Among those who subscribe to it are eminent such as my colleague Sergio López Ayllón, general director of the Center for Economic Research and Teaching (CIDE); Julio Frenk, former Federal Secretary of Health and Chancellor of the University of Florida; Jaime Sepúlveda, executive director of the Institute of Global Health Sciences; the lawyer Luis de la Barreda; the political scientist Federico Reyes Heroles; the ex-leader of the 1968 National Strike Council, Gilberto Guevara Niebla; the president of Mexicans Against Corruption and Impunity, María Amparo Casar; the former Undersecretary of Finance and former director of the IMSS Julio Levi, and the former president of the Federal Electoral Institute (today INE), José Woldenberg.

They denounce:

“The UDLAP has been subjected to a very serious violation of the law and a vandalism by the state police. The Board for the Care of Private Assistance Institutions of the state of Puebla, controlled by the state government, has tried to impose spurious Patronage and rector under the pretext of the ongoing internal conflict of the patronage… ”.

Companion in Millennium, Barbosa should not have emphasized his personal interest in publicly acknowledging that Ríos Piter is his friend.

He is obliged to stay on the sidelines, as well as to wait and respect what the Judicial Power decides.
