You are currently viewing Jordan Henderson set to stay at Liverpool as Jurgen Klopp’s side linked with Saul Niguez move

The situation in the Liverpool midfielder could become much clearer in the coming weeks as the club appear poised to make their mark in the transfer market.

The Reds are said to be set to test Atletico Madrid’s resolve on star player Saul Niguez with a £ 34.3million offer, while Jordan Henderson now looks set to stay at the club.

Saul is also a target for Barcelona this summer

There has been a lot of talk about Jurgen Klopp’s midfielder options over the past few weeks.

It was initially announced that Jordan Henderson could leave the club this summer following a stall in contract negotiations.

The Liverpool captain currently has two years on his contract and several publications have said the club hierarchy may want to sell him to avoid a repeat of Gini Wijnaldum’s situation where he left for free.

This rumor was however quashed with Eurosport indicating that Henderson will not be sold this summer.

Henderson suffered an injury in 2020/21 but is now back in great shape

“As far as Henderson is concerned, he’s not going to leave in that window,” Dean Jones said. “There is no way Liverpool will let him go along with Wijnaldum, because your whole squad will start to fall apart.”

With the club captain set to stay, Klopp can now focus on replacing Wijnaldum with Saul, the most likely option according to various sources.

Spain’s Diario Sport store reported that the Reds have made an offer of € 40million (£ 34.3million). Whether this offer is accepted or not, Liverpool are making it clear that they are definitely looking for a new central midfielder.

The club recently secured an additional £ 17million following sales of Marko Grujic and Taiwo Awoniyi to Porto and Union Berlin respectively.

While Saul may not be a Liverpool player at the end of the transfer window, his current manager Diego Simeone is resigned to losing him this summer.

He told AS: “I have spoken with him and we cannot put aside the rumors and what we are talking about. If you stay you work as you always have and if you leave the door will be opened in the best possible way.

“We’ve been together for eight years, I think we gave him everything we had as a coach and him as a footballer. If he has to go, a big hug, we wish him the best and continue to be friends as always. Either in Barcelona or elsewhere.

Saul started his career at Rayo Vallecano before moving on to Atletico where he played over 400 games for their “B” and premier team.

Last season he played 33 times in the league and was instrumental in Atletico’s success by winning the La Liga title for the first time in seven years.
