You are currently viewing Friend Peter R. de Vries: ‘I just found three more notes from him’

Saturday, two days after his death, she gave an interview the Volkskrant. The conversation was published on Thursday, on the day of De Vries’ funeral.

The two met six years ago. She deliberately chose to stay out of the limelight. However, now that she has no choice but to remain anonymous, she just wants to talk about her boyfriend. “I don’t want to be that anonymous partner who is so much speculated about, but now the police have to do it.”

She has been protected since the attack on De Vries, who was a confidential adviser to the key witness in the Marengo trial. Although her own safety is not “interested” at the moment, she often spoke to her partner about his safety. “I was against his becoming a confidant of the key witness in the Marengo trial. But I also understood why he wanted to do this: as a crime reporter of that caliber you want to be involved in such a mega criminal case. But now I’m left wondering if I could have done more to stop him. That question will always haunt me.”

love notes

De Vries surprised his girlfriend by regularly hiding love notes in her house. “I just found three more notes from him. If I had to leave the house before he did, he always put a letter on my pillow. (…) He tore sheets from his notebook or from my notebooks, wrote sweet texts on them and put them in funny places – behind my toothbrush, in the freezer, in a pan that still had food in it – the grease stains are still there on –, in my shoes, between my laptop, on the hood, in the drawer between my clothes, my mother found one under a pile of placemats here on the table.”

The loss of De Vries “exceeds everything” she has experienced so far. “I thought I was very strong, but sometimes I think: it’s too big, I can’t handle this. For a moment, for a moment, I thought: if only I had never met you. Of course that’s selfish, but the pain is so great, so indescribable.”
