After the fiasco of recent years, especially this one, it was clear that RTVE had to rethink its strategy a lot to choose the candidate for the next Eurovision. With enough expectation, today the public entity has announced the birth of a Festival in Benidorm whose winner will be the Spanish representative in Italy.
With no official name for the event (beyond the # Benivisión with which they have announced it), this festival will be open to all types of artists and will be held in early 2022. It will consist of two semi-finals and a grand final, in which the winner will be our representative in Eurovision 2022.
In this way, the Spanish public radio and television join the tradition of selection festivals which is celebrated in other countries such as the Swedish Melodifestivalen or the Sanremo Festival, which Moonlight, current champions.
“Forget melancholy and bad results”
The decision to create this new festival is quite clear and the president of RTVE, José Manuel Pérez Tornero, does not hide it: “forget the melancholy and the bad results of previous years”, proclaims the executive.
Since TVE need to get everyone involved again and amplify the focus of the Spanish candidates, which is one of the great pending issues of the national organizers. You just have to see how little noise the Blas Cantó song has made, not at an international level but even within our borders.
While the Eurovision jury vote continues being marked by geopolitical circumstances, the popular vote is not so. In fact, Eurofans from all over the world are aware of the different selection festivals for the contest and the presence of the countries in the semifinals tends to give a lot of push.
With this announcement, RTVE seems to be tackling a new and promising direction whose results we will see in a few months. I don’t know to what extent this entire selection process will work but I think this Benidorm Festival is one of the best options they had to try to keep the Eurovision flame alive.
